Kyle Utter is a representational painter who lives in Brooklyn and works in NYC where he is attending graduate school at Hunter College in pursuit of his MFA. He is originally from Michigan and moved to Brooklyn in 2007 to attend undergraduate studies at Pratt Institute, where he received his B.F.A. in 2011.
The body of work on display here are paintings from his undergraduate studies and the time between undergraduate and graduate school. They are highly personal, earnest projections of the spaces, places and things that define him and those closest to him. As much as the paintings depict things we may have all experienced, the apartment building foyer, the kitchen, the couch, etc. they are not prosaic. There is a lyricism in composition, color choice and paint handling that draws us in and shows us a calibrated representation of scenes we know reexamined through the lens of painting.
